I was surfing the Tableau website and recently spotted a testimonial on their partner pages stating “Tableau Partners are an extension of our team, enabling people all over the world to achieve better insights from their data.”
Working in the data virtualization industry, this statement resonated with me because we all know that it shouldn’t be that difficult to gain insights from big data, but unfortunately, it very often is. All kinds of data can be put into a data lake, for example, but data can only be taken out if it’s formatted to fit the particular tool. Plus some of the data comes to the lake from on-premises systems, while other data comes from cloud sources. Companies can now put all their data into a single place, but they need multiple tools to get it out, and these tools often don’t speak to each other.
How can companies gain easy access to all the data they own, no matter the format or structure? And how can analysts connect to billions of records to get what they need, fast? And ultimately, how can customers leverage Tableau partners to achieve those better insights from their data?
Ideally, they would establish a hybrid infrastructure that supports three types of repositories, working in tandem:
1. Cold storage, for structured or unstructured data that is accessed infrequently
2. Warm storage, for structured data that is accessed moderately frequently
3. Hot storage, for structured data that is accessed very frequently
The cold data, in any format, could be stored in the data lake, while the warm data could be relegated to your relational databases and traditional data warehouses, and the hot data could reside in specially designed analytical databases designed for optimal performance.
A Hybrid Solution
This ideal scenario is attainable using technologies such as Tableau and Denodo. Tableau works directly with the warm data, and also offers Tableau Data Extracts for capturing real-time views of the hot data in memory, and the Denodo Platform, establishes a data virtualization layer that provides Tableau with real-time views of all three tiers, simultaneously, without replicating any data.
