Data Virtualization aceleration

Increased Demand for Data Virtualization as one of the Biggest Changes in the 2016 Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools

The Magic Quadrant (MQ) is a well-known series of research reports published by the analyst firm Gartner, Inc., offering valuable insights into the status, direction and significant players of various IT markets.  Denodo believes that the 2016 Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools released by Gartner in August emphasizes the need for rapid data integration leveraging a dynamic model framework in recognition of the limitations of traditional bulk-batch approaches.  Remarking on the present direction of data integration, Gartner states “The biggest changes in the market from 2015 are the increased demand for data virtualization, the growing use of data integration tools to combine “data lakes” with existing integration solutions, and the overall expectation that data integration will become cloud- and on-premises-agnostic.” Let’s take a closer look at these key market changes identified by Gartner.

Increased Demand for Data Virtualization

We believe that Gartner’s observation of the increase in demand for Data Virtualization clearly signals that this important technology has achieved broad recognition as an agile method of data integration for organizations frustrated with long, repetitive, and expensive methods of physically moving data such as ETL (Extract, Transform and Load).

Data virtualization is a virtual data layer that combines disparate data from a variety of source systems into complete, connected information and then presents that information to business users through applications and reporting solutions. Data virtualization has grown to become a critical part of modern data architectures. This is due to its flexible approach and ability to quickly integrate new data sources and to provide the information in real-time to business users.

Among the vendors positioned in the 2016 Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools, Denodo achieved the furthest placement in the “Visionaries” quadrant for completeness of vision. We feel this clearly demonstrates the growing importance of data virtualization in overcoming the business challenges of today’s enterprises.

Enabling Logical Data Lake

A second key change gleaned by Denodo from Gartner’s observations on the direction of the data integration market is the growing use of data integration tools to combine “data lakes” with existing integration solutions. This can be accomplished by using Data Virtualization to combine one or more physical data lakes with other enterprise data to create a “virtual” or “logical” data lake. This approach provides a way to access data from separate systems through an abstraction layer that makes it appear as if the data is consolidated in a single data lake, thereby improving the enterprise functionality of data lakes.

Data virtualization can facilitate and expedite accessing and exploring critical data in a cost-effective manner, and assist organizations in deriving more value from their data lakes and their information. Data virtualization technologies can improve an organization’s ability to govern and extract more value from its data lakes by extending them as logical data lakes.

Integration Strategy Agnostic to Cloud and On-premises

A third key change gleaned by Denodo from Gartner’s observations on the direction of the data integration market is the overall expectation that data integration will become cloud- and on-premises-agnostic. The Denodo Platform accomplishes this by having the flexibility to operate in any of the following configurations: (1) run on-premises and connect to both cloud and on-premises data sources, (2) run in the cloud and connect to both cloud and on-premises data sources, and (3) run one instance in the cloud and another instance on-premises where the on-premises instance can function as a gateway for exposing the on-premises data sources.

Download the report: According to Gartner, “The data integration tool market was worth approximately $2.8 billion in constant currency at the end of 2015, an increase of 10.5% from the end of 2014”. This represents a 52% increase in the rate of growth compared to the previous year. The 2016 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools is the perfect report if you are considering agile, pervasive and modern methods of data integration.
