Drillinginfo Accelerates the Delivery of Complex, Enriched Data Sets: From Two Weeks to Less Than a Day
Oil and gas companies rely on timely intelligence to guide daily drilling, investment, and business development decisions. This is why Drillinginfo, which gathers information from a variety of sources and leverages it to develop enriched intelligence, packaged specifically to meet the needs of oil and gas companies, needs to eliminate every possible delay from the delivery process.
Bumps in the Road
Certain delays seemed inevitable. Drillinginfo was collecting data of diverse types, including geo-spatial data, from numerous public and private sources, accessed using myriad protocols and security measures, and this resulted in a highly complex, time-consuming process. Drillinginfo was successfully assembling the required data in a data warehouse, yet the company was doing so via proprietary extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes that sometimes took as long as two weeks to complete.
“Our data acquisition and integration process was very complicated, requiring a number of technologies,” says Jay Heydt, Manager of Database Technologies at Drillinginfo, “and the delivery of that integrated data, to a suite of applications, was also very complicated; we had consumers accessing different data sets via different services through different connectors.”
Drillinginfo needed to accelerate this process with a faster data integration solution. “As a data and business intelligence provider, one of our biggest challenges is rapidly exposing data as services in order to drive revenue with the data that we acquire,” says Heydt.
Streamlining the Process
Drillinginfo implemented the Denodo Platform, which uses data virtualization to establish a logical data warehouse. The new logical data warehouse sits in a layer above Drillinginfo’s myriad data sources, providing seamless, real-time access to the company’s existing physical data warehouse, numerous geo-spatial data sources, and other sources. “The Denodo Platform enables us to build and deliver data services to our internal and external consumers within a day,” says Heydt, “instead of the one or two weeks needed by our ETL processes.”
Drillinginfo’s data products are used in a wide variety of settings beyond reports and dashboards, such as being leveraged by customers to build new applications. After getting started with the Denodo Platform, Heydt started to see additional benefits for Drillinginfo’s customers. “Our data sources are now servicing more customers than they did when it was taking us two weeks to do the development,” says Heydt. “We’ve got up to 40 professional developers and 10 extra consumers using it, and they’re running 5 to 8 different applications on it.”
The Denodo Factor
Heydt is highly confident in Drillinginfo’s choice to go with Denodo: “Denodo is good for data virtualization because of the variety of data sources it supports and the richness of its consumption models,” says Heydt. “The RESTful endpoints are highly performant, the JDBC driver is meeting all our requirements, and the caching options are as complicated or as simple as you want them to be. For a data provider like us, the Denodo Platform has a suite of tools that support all of our data integration and data virtualization needs.”
